How to resolve CRC errors in smart meters

Overview

A CRC error is a checksum error that occurs when the data from the smart meter is corrupted or incomplete. While a few CRC errors may not have an immediate impact, a series of these errors can cause the charging station to switch to safe mode and limit the charging capacity.

Causes of CRC errors

  • Defective, damaged, or excessively long data cables.

  • Issues with a P1 extender or P1 splitter.

  • Software issues that will be resolved in future firmware updates.

Steps to resolve CRC errors

  • Check the length of the P1 cable: Ensure that the P1 cable is less than 20 meters long. Long cables can cause signal loss, leading to CRC errors.

  • Test without P1 Splitter/Extender: Remove any P1 splitters or extenders and test the connection again. These devices can sometimes cause interference.

  • Inspect the P1 cable: Check if the P1 cable is undamaged and if the connectors are properly and securely attached. Damaged cables or loose connections can cause CRC errors.

  • Use a P1 tester: Test the signal at the meter and the cable with a P1 tester to test the quality of the connection. This can help identify signal issues.
