What is the maximum length of a cable between charge station and smart meter for Active Load Balancing with P1?

If you want to use Active Load Balancing, the charging station must be able to communicate with the smart meter adequately.

In case the P1 interface from the smart meter is used, mostly in the Netherlands and Belgium, the cable between the Smart Meter and P1-port on the Alfen charging station may not be longer than 20 meters.

The use of P1-splitters, longer cables, low-quality or damaged cables will cause no or interrupted communication and therefor correct operation of the Active Loadbalancing feature in the charger is not guaranteed.

The use of a shielded ethernet (UTP) cable, with twisted wires, is highly recommended.

When the distance between the meter and charger is longer than 20 meters, P1 must not be used.
Alternatively a Modbus TCP/IP meter (such as a Socomec) or Modbus RTU meter (RS-485, only available on some more recent models) should be considered.
Please refer to the external energy meter manual for more detailed information.
